Sanchez holds off blaming Morocco for Ceuta migrant influx

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday that the influx of migrants to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta roughly a month earlier remained under investigation, stopping short of assigning blame to Morocco for the incident.

The statement came as Spain sought to balance diplomatic relations with its North African neighbour while addressing domestic concerns about border security and irregular migration. Sanchez indicated that authorities had not yet completed their assessment of what triggered the sudden surge of crossings to the enclave on Spain's North African coast.

The migration pressure on Ceuta has persisted as a flashpoint in Spain-Morocco relations, with both nations sharing responsibility for controlling movements across their maritime border. Officials in Madrid have previously cited various factors contributing to migrant flows, including economic conditions, geopolitical instability in West Africa, and seasonal patterns.

The Spanish government's cautious approach reflects its interest in maintaining cooperative ties with Rabat on migration management and broader security issues. Both countries have established joint mechanisms to address irregular migration, though enforcement challenges persist on both sides of the border.
