MANILA — The Sandiganbayan's Third Division has approved a motion allowing former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez to attend pretrial proceedings in his plunder case through videoconference, according to court officials.
The court granted Romualdez's manifestation with motion on Thursday, enabling him to participate remotely in the scheduled pretrial conference. Third Division Clerk of Court Dennis Pulma confirmed the approval, which takes effect for the September 25 hearing.
The decision permits the accused to join proceedings without physical presence in the courtroom, a measure that has become increasingly utilized in the Philippine judicial system for various logistical and administrative reasons.
Romualdez, a prominent political figure and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, faces plunder charges before the anti-graft court.
