KORONADAL CITY — A joint environmental cleanup operation in Malapatan town, Sarangani province, recovered approximately 300 kilograms of garbage from mangrove forests and adjacent coastal areas, authorities said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Region 12 (DENR-12), working alongside the municipal government and community groups, coordinated the collection effort targeting debris accumulated in ecologically sensitive zones. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Sarangani led the technical aspects of the operation.
Mangrove ecosystems serve as nurseries for commercial fish species and provide natural protection against coastal erosion and storm surge. Regular cleanup initiatives aim to remove anthropogenic waste that threatens these vital habitats and the communities dependent on marine resources.
The operation reflects broader environmental management priorities in Region 12, where coastal degradation poses ongoing challenges to fisheries and local livelihoods. Authorities have signaled commitment to intensifying cleanup drives across vulnerable coastal and mangrove areas throughout Sarangani.
