Sarawak air quality deteriorates as multiple districts approach hazardous levels

Air quality in several Sarawak districts has deteriorated significantly, with Serian recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 476, nearly reaching the hazardous threshold of 500. The reading, measured at the end of August, reflects worsening atmospheric conditions across multiple parts of the state.
Three additional areas in Sarawak have also been classified as hazardous or approaching hazardous levels, indicating a widespread pollution event affecting the region. The elevated API readings typically result from a combination of factors including industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and in some cases, transboundary haze from neighbouring regions.
Health officials have advised residents in affected districts to limit outdoor activities and take protective measures, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Real-time air quality monitoring remains in place across Sarawak to track further developments.
