Serian in Sarawak is approaching hazardous air quality levels, with an air pollution index (API) reading of 495, raising concerns among health authorities and residents in the region.
Three additional areas across the state are similarly affected by deteriorating air conditions. Kuching recorded an API reading of 289, while Samarahan and Sri Aman measured 265 and 250 respectively, all classified as very unhealthy according to air quality standards.
The widespread decline in air quality across multiple districts suggests a significant environmental challenge affecting a broad swath of Sarawak's population. Authorities typically recommend that residents in areas with very unhealthy air quality readings limit outdoor activities and consider using air filtration masks.
The situation underscores ongoing air pollution challenges in the region, with transboundary haze and local sources commonly contributing to degraded air conditions in Sarawak during certain periods of the year.
