Sarawak air quality plunges to hazardous levels amid haze emergency

Air quality in Sarawak has deteriorated sharply, with four sites across the state recording hazardous API (Air Pollutant Index) levels on Monday. The readings represent the highest pollution alert triggered since August 30 and signal a concerning trend that could escalate into a full haze emergency if conditions persist.

The hazardous classifications indicate API readings above 300, which pose significant health risks to the general population and can trigger respiratory problems in vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. The spike in pollution levels has prompted regional authorities to monitor air quality developments closely.

Haze in Sarawak and neighbouring regions is typically attributed to transboundary smoke from land and forest fires in Indonesia, particularly during the dry season.
