Sarawak air quality shows modest improvement but remains hazardous

KUCHING, Sept 5 — Air quality readings across Sarawak reflected a mixed picture Thursday as haze conditions persisted across the state's populated areas. Serian recorded a marginal improvement in its Air Pollutant Index, though the reading of 390 at 7am remained in the hazardous category and posed health risks to sensitive groups.

Other key monitoring stations painted a more concerning picture. Kuching, Tebedu, and Lundu all remained classified at "very unhealthy" levels, indicating that air quality had deteriorated to levels requiring immediate health precautions for the general population. Residents in these areas were advised to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection when venturing outside.

The slight easing in Serian suggested some movement in atmospheric conditions, though meteorological patterns continued to trap pollutants across the region. Authorities have maintained heightened monitoring of air quality indices across Sarawak, with particular focus on densely populated zones and areas with vulnerable populations including children, elderly residents, and those with respiratory conditions.

Regional haze episodes typically intensify during certain seasons when weather patterns and agricultural burning in neighbouring areas combine to degrade air quality. Residents are advised to monitor official air quality updates regularly and adjust outdoor plans accordingly until conditions improve further.
