Sarawak backbenchers to serve watchdog role if GPS sweeps polls
A senior Sarawak minister has suggested state government backbenchers would function as an internal opposition if the Gabungan Parti Sarawak secures all seats in the state assembly.

Sarawak Local Government Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has outlined a mechanism for legislative accountability should his coalition achieve a clean sweep in upcoming state elections.
Abdul Karim said backbenchers from the ruling coalition would assume a scrutiny function typically performed by opposition members, effectively serving as an internal check on government decisions.
The proposal addresses concerns about legislative oversight in a unicameral chamber where a single party holds every seat. Under the arrangement, backbenchers would be expected to raise questions and critique government policies despite belonging to the ruling coalition.
The Sarawak state assembly currently operates with limited opposition representation. A complete GPS victory would eliminate external parliamentary opposition entirely, making the backbench role more critical to maintaining legislative debate and accountability mechanisms.
Abdul Karim's remarks underscore efforts by Sarawak's ruling coalition to demonstrate commitment to democratic principles and checks and balances, even in a scenario where it achieves total parliamentary dominance.
