Sarawak Chief Minister clarifies federal seat increase agreement timeline

KUCHING — Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg has clarified that there is no inconsistency between the federal government's conditional agreement to increase the state's parliamentary representation and the Election Commission's position that it has not received an official proposal.

Abang Johari explained that the agreement in principle from the federal administration represents an understanding that additional seats would be granted once the proper procedures are followed and formal documentation is submitted to the Election Commission. He emphasised that the process requires sequential steps, with the Election Commission's involvement coming after the necessary groundwork is completed at the federal level.
