Sarawak couple accused of recruiting friends to smuggle cocaine to Japan

A Sarawakian couple allegedly orchestrated a drug smuggling operation by recruiting three acquaintances to transport cocaine into Japan, according to statements from Bukit Aman, the headquarters of the Royal Malaysia Police. Each of the three couriers was reportedly offered RM8,000 to participate in the scheme. The investigation details suggest the couple played a coordinating role in the international narcotics trafficking network. Bukit Aman's drug enforcement division initiated the probe that uncovered the alleged arrangement. The case highlights ongoing concerns about Malaysia's role in regional drug trafficking networks, with authorities frequently identifying residents who serve as intermediaries in international smuggling operations. The alleged plot involved transporting significant quantities of cocaine, a Class A controlled substance prohibited in Malaysia and Japan. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether arrests have been made or the current status of the investigation. Drug trafficking carries severe penalties in Malaysia, including lengthy prison sentences and mandatory minimum sentences in certain circumstances.
