Sarawak districts grapple with unhealthy air quality as haze persists

KUCHING — Air quality deteriorated across several parts of Sarawak on Thursday, with Kuching, Samarahan and Serian registering unhealthy API levels as of 2pm, according to environmental monitoring data.

The unhealthy readings underscore persistent haze conditions blanketing the state, which have raised concerns among residents and authorities. The pollution levels typically indicate that members of the general public may begin to experience health effects, with vulnerable groups including children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions facing greater risk.

Sarawak has been grappling with transboundary haze recurrently, with air quality fluctuating across different districts depending on wind patterns and emission sources from neighboring regions. Residents have been advised to monitor daily API updates and take appropriate precautions during periods of poor air quality.

The Department of Environment and the Malaysian Meteorological Department continue to track air quality developments across the state. Officials have urged the public to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection during episodes of elevated pollution.
