Sarawak extends cloud-seeding drive as haze conditions show signs of improvement

KUCHING — Sarawak's cloud-seeding programme has been extended as the state continues efforts to mitigate the impact of transboundary haze. The operations, which have intensified in recent weeks, are aimed at triggering rainfall to clear smoke and improve air quality across affected areas.
The Serian district has recorded encouraging improvements in its Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, signalling that intervention measures are yielding results. However, state authorities have maintained the extension of cloud-seeding activities to ensure sustained relief from haze conditions that have periodically affected the region.
Transboundary haze, often originating from land-clearing fires in neighbouring Kalimantan, has been a recurring environmental challenge for Sarawak and other parts of Malaysia. Cloud seeding, which involves dispersing substances into clouds to encourage precipitation, has become an established tool in the state's air quality management strategy.
Official monitoring continues as meteorological conditions and air quality indicators are assessed daily. The extension of operations reflects the state government's commitment to protecting public health and maintaining acceptable air quality standards for residents.
