The Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has backed a comprehensive worker protection scheme that extends accident coverage beyond standard working hours, underscoring growing support for enhanced employee safeguards in the state.
Chairman Zaidi Nasar said the Lindung 24/7 initiative represents an important step in protecting workers and their dependents from financial hardship caused by accidents occurring outside the workplace. The extended coverage addresses a significant gap in existing protection mechanisms, he noted.
Union officials have characterised the additional contribution required to fund the scheme as reasonable and proportionate to the expanded benefits provided. The endorsement reflects broader sector recognition that traditional accident insurance frameworks may leave workers vulnerable during non-working hours.
The MTUC's backing provides significant momentum for the initiative among Sarawak's workforce, potentially influencing adoption rates across the state's various industries.
