Sarawak offers free tertiary education to UEC holders without Malay requirement

The Sarawak government has announced a new initiative to support UEC qualification holders by offering free tertiary education at four state-funded institutions, removing the requirement to demonstrate Malay language proficiency.

Under the scheme, eligible UEC holders will have access to government-subsidised places without the customary Bahasa Malaysia competency prerequisite. However, prospective students will need to meet English language requirements, as all four participating institutions use English as their primary medium of instruction.

The move represents an effort to expand educational opportunities for students who have completed the Unified Examination Certificate, a qualification recognised across several Southeast Asian countries and particularly prevalent among Chinese-medium schools.

The four state-owned higher education institutions participating in the programme have adopted English as their instructional language, reflecting international standards in tertiary education. This requirement ensures students can effectively engage with coursework and academic materials at these institutions.

The initiative underscores Sarawak's commitment to making higher education more accessible to a broader segment of the student population while maintaining academic standards through English language proficiency requirements.
