Sarawak polls rhetoric risks undermining Petronas settlement talks

Political rhetoric surrounding Sarawak's state election threatens to derail delicate negotiations between the state and national oil company Petronas, analysts cautioned on Tuesday.

Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri, a policy analyst, said that injecting campaign politics into the long-running dispute could push both parties to entrench their positions and damage trust in the legal framework designed to resolve their differences.

The warning comes as Sarawak gears up for its elections, with the state's resource revenue arrangements with Petronas remaining a contentious issue in state politics. The two parties have been engaged in discussions aimed at reaching a settlement over disputed claims and contractual matters.

Analysts have stressed the importance of keeping negotiations insulated from electoral cycles to preserve the integrity of talks and maintain momentum toward a resolution. Any deterioration in relations between Sarawak and Petronas could have broader implications for energy policy and state-federal relations in Malaysia.

Both parties have previously indicated willingness to pursue negotiated settlements rather than protracted legal battles, though specific details of ongoing discussions remain confidential.
