Sarawak pollution worsens as three districts hit hazardous air levels

Three districts in Sarawak are experiencing hazardous air quality conditions, according to latest Air Pollutant Index (API) readings recorded early this week. Serian, Kuching and Samarahan all registered API levels in the hazardous category as of 8 am, prompting renewed health warnings for vulnerable populations.
The hazardous classification indicates API readings of 300 and above, representing a significant health risk even to healthy individuals with prolonged exposure. Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks when venturing outside.
The deteriorating air quality comes as transboundary haze continues to affect several regions in South and Southeast Asia. Sarawak has faced recurring air pollution challenges during the dry season, with sources of haze often linked to land-clearing activities in the wider region.
Authorities in Sarawak have urged residents to monitor daily API updates and follow health advisories issued by the Department of Environment. Those experiencing respiratory difficulties are encouraged to seek medical attention immediately.
