KUCHING, Aug 22 — Sarawak has postponed its flagship National Day Celebration for 2026 along with two additional significant public events as hazardous air quality grips the state, officials confirmed on Friday.
The decision came after air pollution index readings climbed to unhealthy levels statewide, prompting health and environmental authorities to recommend deferring large outdoor gatherings. The state government prioritised public health concerns in making the determination to reschedule the events.
No new dates have been announced for the postponed celebrations. The state's Department of Health is expected to issue guidance on air quality improvements before revised schedules are finalised.
The haze situation in Sarawak reflects broader air quality challenges affecting parts of Southeast Asia during the region's dry season. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use protective masks when venturing outside during periods of elevated pollution.
