MIRI — Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has indicated that his current tenure as Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president may be his last, in remarks made here on Friday.
The statement comes as the veteran politician seeks to encourage the next generation of party leaders to ready themselves for increased roles within the state's dominant political organisation. Abang Johari, who has held significant positions in Sarawak politics for decades, did not provide specific timelines for any potential succession but emphasised the importance of grooming new talent.
"This may be my last time," the premier said, underscoring the need for party members to step up and take on greater leadership responsibilities. His comments reflect a broader succession planning effort within PBB as the party considers its long-term direction.
The PBB remains the cornerstone of Sarawak's ruling coalition and one of the state's most influential political organisations. Any transition in party leadership could have significant implications for the state's political landscape, particularly regarding the premiership and the composition of the state cabinet.
