Sarawak rights claim no reason to weaken Petronas, says Zaid

Zaid Ibrahim, who previously served as law minister, has weighed into the contentious Petronas-Petros dispute, warning that Sarawak's constitutional claims over oil and gas resources should not be weaponized to erode the national petroleum company's standing.

In remarks directed at Sarawak officials, Zaid emphasized that while the state may have legitimate grievances regarding resource rights, any negotiated resolution must be framed within Malaysia's broader national interest. He cautioned against allowing the dispute to develop into a settlement that fundamentally weakens Petronas' operational or financial capacity.

The ongoing disagreement between Petronas and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petros), Sarawak's state-owned oil company, has simmered for years. At its core lies competing claims over jurisdiction and revenue rights in offshore petroleum fields, with Sarawak arguing for greater autonomy and control over resources within its waters.
