Sarawak's Petros will complement Petronas, not replace it
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg has assured stakeholders that the state's new sovereign wealth fund will work alongside Petronas rather than undermine the national oil corporation's operations in the state.

The Sarawak premier said the state government remains committed to its longstanding partnership with Petronas while building greater capacity to manage and process the state's hydrocarbon resources. Abang Johari emphasised that Petros, Sarawak's sovereign wealth fund, is designed to strengthen the state's position in the energy sector rather than create conflict with the federal oil and gas player.
The assurance comes as Sarawak moves to expand its involvement in upstream and downstream petroleum operations. The state has been pushing for greater control over its natural resources following ongoing discussions with the federal government over resource management and revenue sharing.
Sarawak's development of Petros reflects broader efforts across the region for states and nations to establish sovereign wealth vehicles to capture greater value from their natural resource endowments. The premier's statement suggests the state intends to pursue this goal through cooperation with existing stakeholders rather than confrontation.
The relationship between Petronas and state governments has been a subject of ongoing negotiation, particularly regarding exploration rights, production licences, and revenue allocation. Abang Johari's comments indicate Sarawak is seeking a collaborative framework that allows the state to increase its technical and operational capabilities while maintaining functional partnerships in the sector.
