KUCHING: Haze conditions in Serian have escalated sharply, pushing the Air Pollutant Index (API) to 495 in overnight readings earlier this week. The reading falls just short of the "emergency" classification, which is triggered at 500 and above on the API scale.
The deterioration in air quality has raised concerns among residents and health authorities in the district. An API reading in this range is classified as "hazardous," posing significant health risks to vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
Authorities have advised residents to minimise outdoor activities and wear protective masks when venturing outside. The public is also urged to monitor air quality updates regularly and seek medical attention if experiencing respiratory difficulties.
Serian is among several districts across Sarawak to experience worsening haze conditions. Meteorological forecasts indicate that air quality improvements may depend on wind patterns and weather changes in the coming days.
