Sarawak shelves administrative hub project over land complications
Sarawak has put on hold its plan to develop a new administrative centre in Rambungan, with state officials citing unresolved land issues as the primary obstacle to the project's advancement.

The proposed development, which was envisioned as a mini-Putrajaya for the state, will not proceed in its current form despite substantial planning already undertaken for related infrastructure, according to Deputy Minister Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
The Rambungan project had been conceptualised as a purpose-built administrative hub to consolidate state government operations. However, complexities surrounding land acquisition and tenure have proven insurmountable barriers to implementation.
Although preparatory work on supporting infrastructure had been advanced, these efforts cannot be translated into the broader project without first resolving the underlying land complications, officials indicated.
The shelving of the initiative represents a significant setback for Sarawak's broader urban development ambitions. The state had positioned the administrative centre as a flagship project to enhance governance efficiency and modernise its institutional framework.
No timeline has been provided for a potential revival of the project, leaving the status of the considerable infrastructure planning work undertaken to date uncertain.
