Sarawak steps up rabies control with mass dog vaccination drive

KUCHING — Sarawak authorities have vaccinated 3,579 dogs and distributed 2,281 oral rabies vaccine baits during a recent field vaccination drive, marking a significant push in the state's rabies control efforts.
The comprehensive campaign targeted canine populations across multiple areas in Sarawak, employing both direct vaccination of domestic dogs and targeted oral immunisation strategies. Officials deployed oral baits designed to immunise stray and wild dog populations that may prove difficult to access through conventional vaccination methods.
Rabies remains a serious public health concern in the region, with the virus typically transmitted through bites and scratches from infected animals. The disease is almost universally fatal once symptoms appear, making prevention through animal vaccination a critical component of disease management.
Sarawak's latest initiative represents part of broader efforts by the state health and veterinary authorities to maintain disease surveillance and prevent human exposures. Officials have urged pet owners to ensure their animals are regularly vaccinated and to report any suspected cases of animal rabies to veterinary authorities promptly.
