KUCHING, Oct 16 — The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly has suspended DAP representative Chong Chieng Jen (Padungan) for the remainder of the current sitting session, stemming from remarks made during budget debate discussions.
The suspension was enacted after Chong's statements, which included offensive language and assertions that could not be verified, drew objections during proceedings in the chamber. The decision reflects the assembly's enforcement of conduct standards expected of elected representatives during legislative debates.
Chong represents the Padungan constituency and is a member of the Democratic Action Party, which holds opposition seats in the state legislature. The suspension marks a formal disciplinary measure by the assembly against the legislator.
Under assembly rules, suspended members are barred from participating in legislative proceedings for the duration of the imposed penalty. The incident underscores ongoing tensions during the state's budget deliberations, a period typically marked by robust debate between government and opposition benches.
