Premier Abang Johari Openg revealed that Sarawak will significantly expand its medical education capacity by doubling student places at Unimas, addressing growing demand for healthcare professionals in the state.
The expansion represents part of the state government's broader strategy to develop human resources in the medical field. The increased intake will allow more Sarawakian students to pursue medical degrees locally, potentially reducing the need for them to study in other states or countries.
Beyond the Unimas expansion, Abang Johari disclosed that University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is preparing to establish its own medical faculty. The new faculty is expected to be operational within approximately two years, further augmenting the state's medical education infrastructure.
The dual initiatives underscore Sarawak's commitment to strengthening its healthcare workforce pipeline. With both universities contributing to medical training, the state aims to produce more doctors and medical professionals to serve the growing population and improve healthcare delivery across the region.
Details regarding the specific timeline for implementing the Unimas capacity increase and the curriculum framework for UTS's medical faculty were not immediately disclosed.
