KUCHING — Sarawak has finalised an integrated roadmap for developing rare earth elements (REE) processing capabilities, with a particular focus on manufacturing advanced magnets used in renewable energy, electronics and defence applications. The framework represents a significant step toward establishing a vertically integrated REE sector within the state.
Chief Minister Awang Tengah Wei Kiong announced the completion of the strategic initiative, which outlines the development pathway for rare earth processing from extraction through to finished magnet production. The roadmap addresses technical, logistical and commercial requirements needed to build competitive advantages in the sector.
Rare earth elements are essential components in the production of permanent magnets, which are critical to wind turbines, electric vehicles, and high-tech manufacturing. The Sarawak initiative comes as global demand for these materials continues to surge amid the worldwide transition to renewable energy and electric mobility.
The state government's comprehensive approach aims to attract domestic and foreign investment while building local technical expertise and manufacturing capacity. Officials indicated the roadmap would support job creation and economic diversification in Sarawak's industrial sector.
The development aligns with Malaysia's broader efforts to strengthen its position in critical mineral supply chains, addressing growing international demand for rare earth materials amid supply chain restructuring.
