MANILA — Neighborhood sari-sari stores are functioning as informal community pharmacies, helping bridge significant gaps in medicine accessibility across the Philippines, according to a qualitative study conducted by researchers from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and Bulacan State University.

The research found that for many Filipinos, purchasing medication has become more manageable through sari-sari stores, where customers can buy individual tablets or small quantities rather than full packages. This flexibility allows residents with limited budgets to obtain necessary medicines without bearing the financial burden of complete prescriptions at traditional pharmacies.

The study underscores the practical role these corner stores have assumed in Philippine communities, particularly in areas where access to formal healthcare infrastructure remains limited. By stocking basic medicines and making them available in affordable quantities, sari-sari stores have become an essential resource for managing common health concerns at the grassroots level.

The findings suggest that these informal retail channels warrant greater recognition in public health discussions and policy considerations. As sari-sari stores continue to serve as de facto community health access points, their role in the broader healthcare system reflects the resourcefulness of Filipino communities in addressing medicine availability challenges.
