The RBI's latest research indicates that unconventional data sources may offer a practical solution to the challenge of accurately measuring regional economic activity in near real-time. By harnessing night-time satellite imagery and online search trends, economists could substantially enhance the precision of state-level growth forecasts, according to findings presented in the central bank's recent analysis.
The study tested the hybrid methodology across three major industrial states, demonstrating that the combination of nightlight data—which reflects economic activity through electricity consumption patterns—and Google Trends search information produced notably more accurate quarterly estimates than traditional methods alone. The integration of these datasets reduced forecast errors by as much as 62 per cent, suggesting meaningful improvements in economic measurement.
The potential application of such techniques holds particular significance for India's policy framework. More timely and accurate state-level growth data could enable the RBI and other government agencies to calibrate monetary policy, fiscal interventions, and development initiatives with greater precision. This proves especially valuable during periods of economic transition or when conventional statistical data lags behind real-time economic developments.
While satellite and internet-based data sources have been explored globally, the RBI's findings underscore their relevance for the Indian context, where regional economic disparities are pronounced and real-time visibility into economic activity remains challenging. The research suggests that blending advanced data analytics with conventional statistical methods could strengthen India's economic monitoring capabilities and support more evidence-based policymaking at the state and national levels.
