Saudi Arabia said it successfully intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Yemen's Houthi group targeting the cities of Riyadh and Dhahran on Wednesday, according to statements from the kingdom's defense ministry. The air defense systems engaged the projectiles before they reached their intended destinations, officials confirmed.
Falling debris from the intercepted missiles struck populated areas, resulting in injuries to civilians on the ground. The exact number of casualties and extent of damage were not immediately specified by authorities. Videos from the scene showed smoke rising from residential neighborhoods in both cities.
The attack represents a continuation of regular missile and drone strikes launched by the Iran-aligned Houthis against Saudi territory. The militant group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has maintained a campaign of attacks on the kingdom throughout the ongoing regional conflict.
Saudi Arabia operates an extensive air defense network intended to protect major cities and critical infrastructure from such attacks. Despite these defensive capabilities, incidents of debris causing ground-level damage have occurred during previous interception operations.
