Saudi Arabia said three people were killed in a barrage of attacks carried out by Houthi fighters against its airport infrastructure on Tuesday. The Iran-backed militant group claimed responsibility for the coordinated assault, which included firing a ballistic missile at King Khalid International Airport in the capital Riyadh, along with strikes on other civilian aviation facilities.
The Houthis, who control parts of Yemen, have intensified cross-border attacks on Saudi territory in recent months, targeting both military and civilian infrastructure. The group has demonstrated increasing capability in deploying advanced weaponry, including ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, raising regional tensions significantly.
The attacks underscore the deteriorating security situation in the Arabian Peninsula, where the Yemen conflict has drawn in multiple regional and international actors. Saudi Arabia has responded to previous Houthi strikes with airstrikes on rebel-held areas, perpetuating a cycle of escalation between the two sides.
The incident comes as diplomatic efforts to resolve the broader Yemen conflict remain stalled. International observers have expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of the ongoing hostilities and the potential for further destabilization across the Middle East.
