Saudi Arabia plans to begin storing crude oil in Singapore from the second half of 2027 as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen energy security in Asia. The storage operations will utilise Singapore's Jurong Rock Caverns, which offer underground storage capacity specifically designed for petroleum products.
The agreement represents a significant shift in how Saudi Arabia manages its crude distribution to Asian consumers, a region that accounts for a substantial portion of global oil demand. By positioning reserves closer to key markets across South and Southeast Asia, the arrangement aims to create a buffer against potential supply chain disruptions and market volatility.
Saudi Aramco, the kingdom's national oil company, will oversee bringing crude supplies to Singapore's storage facilities. The initiative reflects Riyadh's broader strategy to deepen its engagement with Asian economies and ensure stable energy supplies to the region's rapidly growing markets.
The move comes as energy security remains a critical concern for Asian nations dependent on Middle Eastern oil imports. Enhanced storage capacity in a strategically located hub like Singapore could provide greater flexibility in responding to market fluctuations and supply emergencies across the region.
