The Saudi-led military coalition conducting operations in Yemen said its air defences successfully intercepted several projectiles aimed at the kingdom's capital and other cities on Wednesday. Major General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the coalition, confirmed the interceptions and stated that coalition forces had struck a facility operated by the Yemen Petroleum Company in the vicinity of Sanaa.

The strikes and subsequent missile interceptions represent an escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi forces who control much of northern Yemen. The coalition has conducted regular air operations targeting infrastructure and military installations in Houthi-held territories since 2015.

The Houthis have previously demonstrated the capacity to launch long-range missiles and armed drones against targets within Saudi Arabia, though the coalition maintains that its air defence systems have prevented significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Details regarding the extent of damage from Wednesday's airstrike on the petroleum facility were not immediately available.
