The coalition said it successfully detected and intercepted the Houthi drone before it could reach its intended target in the Mecca region on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the military alliance. The intercept operation was carried out using air defense systems deployed across the kingdom.
The Houthi movement, designated as a terrorist organization by Saudi Arabia and several allied nations, has conducted numerous drone and missile strikes against targets across the kingdom since conflict erupted in Yemen in 2015. The group has repeatedly targeted critical infrastructure and populated areas, drawing condemnation from international observers.
This latest interception comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with the Iran-backed rebels claiming responsibility for various cross-border attacks aimed at destabilizing Saudi Arabia. Coalition officials have consistently maintained that their air defense capabilities remain effective in countering such threats.
The coalition, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, has been engaged in military operations in Yemen for over a decade in support of the internationally recognized government fighting against Houthi forces. Regional security analysts say the continued attacks demonstrate the persistent challenges facing efforts to achieve stability in the Arabian Peninsula.
