SBI alerts investors to investment scams promising 30% monthly returns

The State Bank of India has issued a public alert cautioning investors about investment scams that lure victims with promises of 30 percent monthly returns, far exceeding legitimate market-linked investment products. The advisory underscores growing concerns about financial fraud targeting retail investors across the country seeking to grow their wealth.

The bank has identified four major red flags that should trigger immediate suspicion. These include the use of fabricated testimonials from supposed successful investors, creation of artificial urgency through pressure tactics and limited-time offers, distribution of suspicious links and unverified payment methods, and lack of transparent regulatory information or official documentation from established financial institutions.

Fraudsters employ sophisticated tactics to build credibility, often operating through social media platforms, WhatsApp groups, and unofficial websites that mimic legitimate financial services. Victims are typically directed to transfer money through unregulated channels or click on malicious links that compromise their personal and banking information.

To protect themselves, investors should verify all investment offers through official channels of registered financial institutions, check whether advisors are SEBI-registered, and avoid sharing personal or banking details with unverified sources. Any offer promising returns significantly higher than prevailing market rates—typically 12-15 percent annually for equity investments—should be treated with extreme caution.

SBI recommends that individuals conduct independent research before investing, consult with certified financial advisors, and lodge complaints with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) or local law enforcement if they encounter suspicious schemes. The bank emphasizes that legitimate wealth creation is a gradual process and no credible investment product guarantees consistently high monthly returns.
