State Bank of India will add 12,000 employees to its payroll and open 250 fresh branches across the country in the financial year 2026-27, according to the bank's expansion strategy. The recruitment drive represents a significant scaling up of the nation's largest public sector lender as it seeks to strengthen its market presence and service capacity.

The initiative comes as SBI consolidates its standing as a major employment generator in India. As of March 2026, the bank's workforce stood at over 2.45 lakh employees, underscoring its substantial role in the country's job market and financial services sector.

The planned branch additions will extend SBI's retail and corporate banking footprint, particularly in underserved regions. The expansion strategy aligns with the bank's long-term objectives to deepen penetration in tier-two and tier-three cities while enhancing service delivery across existing markets.

The personnel recruitment is expected to support operations across various divisions including customer service, risk management, and digital banking. The new workforce will undergo comprehensive training to align with SBI's evolving operational standards and technological infrastructure.

The dual expansion in human resources and physical infrastructure reflects SBI's confidence in sustained economic growth and rising demand for banking services across India's diverse markets.
