SBI to report RCom, Ambani as wilful defaulters to credit bureaus

State Bank of India has decided to proceed with reporting Reliance Communications and its promoters, including chairman Anil Ambani, to credit information bureaus as wilful defaulters, dismissing the company's representations against the classification.

The decision came after SBI rejected RCom's objections to the wilful defaulter designation. By reporting the company to credit bureaus, SBI effectively restricts RCom's access to formal credit channels and damages the creditworthiness of its promoters and guarantors in the banking system.

Reliance Communications, once a major telecom player, has struggled with mounting debt and declining revenues as competition intensified in the sector. The company's deteriorating financial condition has led to multiple debt restructuring attempts and loan defaults across its lending consortium.

Wilful defaulter status carries significant implications for both corporate borrowers and individual promoters. It signals to the broader financial system that the entity has the capacity to repay its dues but has failed to do so, potentially affecting future borrowing prospects and creditworthiness across banking institutions.

The development reflects broader challenges in India's banking sector as lenders grapple with legacy non-performing assets from the telecom and other distressed sectors. SBI's action underscores the banking regulator's push for stricter enforcement of loan recovery norms against large defaulters.
