SC registry identifies defects in Gandhi's voter deletion petition

The Supreme Court registry on Monday identified multiple procedural issues in the petition submitted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures challenging alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to sources, the registry requested submission of clear copies of identification documents for Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who is listed as a co-petitioner.

Beyond documentation concerns, the registry noted several illegible or missing pages within the petition itself. The filing also showed a shortfall exceeding Rs 200 in required court fees, sources indicated. These defects must be rectified before the petition can proceed through the court system.

Earlier Monday, Gandhi and several other opposition leaders marched to the Supreme Court to lodge the petition personally. The plea seeks establishment of an independent committee chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge, supported by technical experts and prominent citizens, to conduct an independent audit of voter deletions within a specified timeframe.
