The Supreme Court on Tuesday signaled its readiness to consider compensation claims from small business owners and daily-wage earners whose livelihoods have been disrupted by protest-related activities in the national capital.
Expressing deep concern over the plight of traders and workers, the bench noted that while citizens have the right to protest, such demonstrations cannot be allowed to cause disproportionate harm to vulnerable economic groups during critical periods like the festive season.
The court acknowledged that roadblocks, traffic restrictions, and other disruptions associated with protests have resulted in significant losses for small traders, street vendors, and casual laborers who depend on daily earnings for survival. The bench indicated that appropriate mechanisms would be explored to provide relief to those suffering genuine hardship.
The court's stance reflects growing judicial concern about balancing the right to peaceful protest with the economic rights and welfare of ordinary citizens dependent on trade and daily work. The specific modalities for determining eligibility and quantum of compensation are expected to be decided in subsequent hearings.
