Consumers across Singapore have fallen victim to an elaborate scam in which fraudsters impersonate Harvey Norman employees to extract money from unsuspecting targets. The scheme, which has been active since January, has resulted in confirmed losses of at least $4.8 million, authorities said.
The scammers typically contact victims claiming they have either purchased a television or have a pending delivery confirmation awaiting collection. By leveraging the legitimacy of the well-known retailer's brand, the fraudsters persuade victims to provide personal details or make payments under false pretences.
The widespread nature of the scam underscores the growing sophistication of organised fraud rings operating in the region. Authorities have urged consumers to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited contact purporting to be from retailers, and to verify claims directly through official company channels before providing sensitive information or making payments.
Consumers who suspect they have been targeted by similar scams are advised to report the matter to the police immediately and lodge a report with the relevant financial institutions to prevent further unauthorised transactions.
