Scammers impersonating Simba staff, officials fleece victims of $1.3m

The scammers employed social engineering tactics to gain victims' trust, impersonating both staff members of the financial services company Simba and officials from government agencies. By leveraging false authority and creating a sense of urgency, the fraudsters convinced victims to make multiple transfers to accounts controlled by the criminal network.

The scheme resulted in substantial financial losses across multiple victims during the month of October. The largest single case involved a victim who transferred a total of $285,000 across several transactions, demonstrating the sophisticated nature of the fraud and the criminals' ability to manipulate their targets over an extended period.

The Singapore Police Force has urged members of the public to remain vigilant against such impersonation scams. Authorities recommend verifying the identity of callers independently by contacting official company numbers or government agencies directly. Victims are advised to report suspected fraud immediately to the police and their financial institutions to prevent further losses.
