Authorities arrested the CEO of Schaeffler India as investigations continue into a workplace fatality that claimed two lives at the automotive parts manufacturer's plant on June 9. The incident occurred when a pressurized carbon dioxide cylinder being replaced during scheduled maintenance suddenly discharged, exposing the workers to the hazardous gas.
Both fatalities involved employees of a service provider contracted to carry out the maintenance work. The sudden release of the industrial gas proved fatal, prompting immediate intervention by occupational safety officials and police.
The arrest of the company's chief executive marks an escalation in the probe into workplace safety protocols at the facility. Investigators are examining whether adequate precautions and safety measures were in place during the cylinder replacement operation.
The incident has reignited focus on industrial safety standards in India's manufacturing sector. Schaeffler India, a subsidiary of the German multinational bearing and automotive supplier, operates multiple facilities across the country and employs thousands of workers directly and through contracted service providers.
The company has not issued a public statement regarding the arrest or the ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to examine safety compliance records and maintenance procedures at the plant.
