School Security Needs Holistic Approach Beyond CCTV, G25 Tells Government

G25 has called on the Malaysian government to look beyond installing security cameras and hiring more security personnel to tackle violence in schools, warning that technical measures alone cannot resolve underlying issues driving student misconduct.

While acknowledging the need for security infrastructure improvements, the influential Islamic policy group stressed that CCTV systems and additional guards represent only a surface-level response to a more complex problem. Such measures, G25 argued, do not address the fundamental causes that lead students to engage in violent behaviour.

The think tank's statement reflects growing concern among civil society groups about escalating incidents of student violence in Malaysian educational institutions. Authorities have increasingly turned to surveillance and security upgrades as immediate responses to improve campus safety.

G25 has not detailed specific alternative measures but implied that a more holistic approach is needed. This typically involves addressing factors such as mental health support, counselling services, peer mediation programmes, and addressing socioeconomic pressures that may contribute to aggressive behaviour among students.

The government has not yet publicly responded to G25's recommendations, though school safety remains a priority issue for Malaysia's Ministry of Education.
