Schools should shift online when air pollution index hits 100, expert advises

Health professionals are urging schools to transition to online classes when the Air Pollution Index reaches 100, rather than relying solely on face masks to protect students. Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh emphasised that children should remain indoors during severe haze episodes, as respiratory protection alone is insufficient when air quality becomes critically poor. Schools have increasingly adopted hybrid and online learning models in recent years, positioning them to respond quickly to air quality alerts. Education authorities are being urged to establish clear protocols for switching to remote instruction when pollution levels breach critical thresholds, ensuring students' health is prioritised alongside educational continuity during periods of severe atmospheric pollution.
