Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have made significant progress in reading ancient scrolls preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly two millennia ago. The research team employed an unconventional approach, deliberately burning student-written papyrus samples to understand the composition and visibility of ancient texts under modern scanning technology.
The key to the breakthrough lies in the use of leaded ink, which produces distinctive marks visible under X-ray imaging. By experimenting with contemporary scrolls written with similar materials, researchers were able to identify how ancient scribes' writing would appear when subjected to advanced scanning techniques. This foundational work provided crucial data for interpreting the fragile Herculaneum documents, many of which remain illegible to the naked eye.
Using sophisticated software algorithms, the team achieved layer separation in the scanned images, allowing them to distinguish individual pages within tightly rolled papyri without physically unrolling them. This non-invasive approach represents a significant advancement in archaeological preservation techniques. The methodology promises safer recovery of text from the thousands of scrolls discovered at Herculaneum, which were carbonized during Vesuvius's catastrophic 79 AD eruption.
