Scientists have engineered a breakthrough wood-derived material capable of pulling moisture directly from dry air, offering a potential solution to water scarcity challenges facing many regions across South and Southeast Asia. The sponge-like substance can function effectively even in extremely arid conditions where humidity levels fall to just 15 percent, substantially lower than traditional atmospheric water harvesting methods require.

The material's design incorporates an integrated solar thermal storage component, enabling it to release captured water even during nighttime or cloudy conditions. This feature addresses a critical limitation of conventional solar-powered water extraction systems, which typically depend on continuous sunlight for operation.

Field trials of the technology have yielded encouraging results, with the material producing approximately 1.72 liters of fresh drinking water per kilogram daily under real-world conditions. Researchers characterize these findings as a significant advancement in atmospheric water collection, with potential applications ranging from household use in water-stressed communities to larger-scale agricultural and industrial operations.

The development of such technologies assumes heightened importance given increasing water stress across the region.
