Scientists discover 57 deep-sea species off Argentina's coast

A major deep-sea research expedition off the coast of Argentina has yielded a remarkable haul of new marine species, with scientists identifying 57 previously undocumented organisms from the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon. The research team also catalogued five previously unclassified genera during the voyage, underscoring the rich biodiversity of the region's deep-water ecosystems.

Using advanced remotely operated vehicles, researchers collected samples from the submarine canyon's depths, bringing specimens to the surface for detailed analysis. Among the discoveries was a distinctive translucent sea cucumber, which researchers informally named Loki in recognition of its unusual characteristics.

The identification process was significantly accelerated through a collaborative workshop that brought together multiple scientific teams to examine and classify the collected specimens. This coordinated approach proved effective in rapidly processing the extensive biological samples recovered from the deep-sea environment.

The expedition highlights the poorly understood nature of the South Atlantic's abyssal zones, where scientists continue to discover previously unknown life forms. Each discovery contributes to a more complete understanding of deep-ocean ecosystems and their role in global marine biodiversity, experts noted.
