Scientists identify three distinct frog species in Philippines after century

Filipino and foreign researchers have discovered one previously unknown frog species and identified two others that were mistakenly classified as a single species for over 100 years in Mindanao and the Visayas.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A collaborative team of local and international scientists has made a significant breakthrough in amphibian taxonomy, revealing that what was long believed to be one widespread frog species across southern and central Philippines is actually three distinct species.

The discovery emerged after researchers conducted genetic analysis on frog specimens collected from Mindanao and the Visayas region. The three species, which had been classified as cryptic species due to their nearly identical physical appearance, were finally differentiated through molecular examination.

Cryptic species are organisms that appear visually similar to the naked eye but possess distinct genetic differences that classify them as separate species. The century-long misidentification underscores the challenges scientists face when cataloging biodiversity in the Philippines' complex ecosystems.

The findings add to growing evidence of the country's remarkable amphibian diversity and highlight the importance of genetic research in species identification. One of the three species is entirely new to science, while the other two have effectively been "resurrected" from taxonomic obscurity after decades of being overlooked.

The discovery emphasizes the need for continued scientific research in the Philippines' biodiverse regions, where many species remain poorly understood or unidentified.
