Astronomers have employed modern software to analyse Vincent van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' and identify the specific date the artist most likely painted the work during his stay in southern France.

The research team studied the painting's celestial arrangement and used advanced astronomy software to recreate the dawn sky as it would have appeared on various dates in June and July 1889. This methodology allowed scientists to compare the painted sky with accurate astronomical records from that period.

'The Starry Night' remains one of the most recognizable paintings in Western art, created while van Gogh was staying at an asylum in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The work depicts a swirling night sky filled with stars and a crescent moon above a peaceful village landscape.

The study represents an interdisciplinary approach combining art history with scientific analysis, demonstrating how modern technology can illuminate details about historical artworks. The findings add another layer of understanding to van Gogh's creative process and the circumstances surrounding his most famous compositions.

While the exact date has long remained a mystery, this astronomical analysis provides researchers with a more precise timeframe for when the Dutch master transferred his vision to canvas during one of his most prolific periods.
