An international team of scientists has reconstructed the acoustic calls of nine insect species that inhabited Earth during the Jurassic period, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the soundscape of ancient ecosystems. Using fossilized wing specimens, researchers employed advanced laser measurement techniques to analyze microscopic structures that likely functioned as sound-producing organs, or stridulatory apparatus, similar to modern insects like crickets and grasshoppers.
The team then employed computer modeling and artificial intelligence algorithms to translate the physical characteristics of these fossilized structures into acoustic patterns. The analysis revealed considerable diversity in how these prehistoric insects communicated, with most species producing clear chirping sounds audible to human ears. However, one species appears to have evolved the capacity to generate ultrasonic calls—frequencies above the typical human hearing threshold of 20 kilohertz.
The findings suggest that acoustic communication was already a sophisticated and widespread adaptation among insects millions of years before the emergence of humans. The ability of some species to produce ultrasonic vocalizations implies that complex auditory niches existed in ancient insect communities, potentially allowing different species to communicate without acoustic interference from one another.
This research demonstrates how advances in paleontology, combined with computational technologies, can unlock sensory information about extinct organisms that would otherwise remain forever lost to history.
