Marine scientists have documented what they describe as the largest known breeding aggregation of octopuses in the northeastern Pacific Ocean, located in the deep waters off the California coast. The site, informally dubbed the 'Octopus Garden,' contains approximately 20,000 nests clustered in a relatively confined area of the seafloor.
The pearl octopuses inhabiting this underwater nursery have adapted to thrive in an environment shaped by hydrothermal activity. Warm water emanating from vents in the ocean floor creates conditions favourable for reproduction and egg incubation, allowing the creatures to concentrate their breeding efforts in this nutrient-rich zone.
Research observations indicate that female octopuses display dedicated maternal behaviour, tending carefully to their eggs throughout the incubation period until the young hatch and disperse into the ocean. This extended parental care comes at significant biological cost to the females, whose bodies eventually serve as nourishment for the broader deep-sea ecosystem.
The discovery provides scientists with unprecedented insights into the reproductive strategies and life cycles of deep-sea cephalopods.
